Reasons to fear late adulthood: a Josei anime recommendation

Screen Shot 2015-07-24 at 11.33.14 AMOtona Joshi no Anime Time is definitely one of those titles that doesn’t receive much attention, and rightfully so because it appeals only to a handful of few and neglects the tastes of a broader panty-sniffing-fanservice-slut audience out there. I joke, but in actuality the contents of this anime were created with a much more mature group of female viewers in mind. Through the realism of the many themes that it explores it often scares away your average shounen fanboy, but it doesn’t mean that you might not find it interesting.

About the anime

The anime itself actually consists of four different and independent stories that run for an average time of twenty-five minutes each. It’s produced by a number of companies including Bones, and NHK. To our delight or dismay, the stories display different art styles that help reflect and convey a range of moods in this romance/drama title.

Now, what exactly makes it so fucking mature you ask? Well, simply put it’s because all four stories look at different personal issues surrounding females in their late adulthood. Otona Joshi no Anime Time explores themes of regret, insecurity, mundaneness, fear, doubt, unhappiness, and many others in an exceptionally realistic way. This content cocktail is what makes such an anime so unique because viewers might very well get a future glimpse of adulthood that’s all too real for them.

Why you should give it a try

This title is definitely a refreshing choice to go by to finally break that moe streak of late if you aren’t afraid to delve into some more serious pieces of work. This anime becomes an even better recommendation if you’re into tear-jerkers (like myself). You definitely won’t be tearing up watching these stories but you do get to seriously sympathise if not empathise with the protagonists. A feat which couldn’t be accomplished if we were looking at the rise of some highly unlikely harem king.

Aside from this, the fact that it’s only made up of four twenty-five minute shorts is probably one of its biggest selling points as there’s no real serious time investment.
